Sketchblog » July 2010 » More World Cup cartoons - too soon?
Has enough time gone by for me to be able to post a few cartoons on the subject of England's World Cup failure?

I really did want England to go all the way - but as a cartoonist you have to be realistic and prepare for the most likely scenario, or cook up some ideas that would work in either event. Topical gags have a short shelf life, and selling a cartoon before the story goes stale can be a tricky business. So I'm sorry to say that all of these cartoons were written, drawn and in the post before Germany even got a kick of the ball.

I wasn't able to sell any of these... I imagine the magazine editors were inundated with similar gags, and one or two mags sidestepped the outcome of the match entirely as their deadlines were before the game, and it would have been old news by the time their next edition came around.

Not all of my England-related cartoons were about our inevitable defeat, though. I came up with several variations on the trend of sticking a Saint George's cross on anything that moves - here's a personal favourite:

If anyone stills feels it's too early to be joking about our poor performance, here's a World Cup cartoon that's not England-specific:

Thanks Bill - I was really pleased with that one. At least I can probably submit it again the next time England fever (inevitably) surfaces.

Hope you're both well!
