My most high-profile clients are probably those that only accept cartoons on-spec: Private Eye, The Spectator, Reader's Digest and other general-circulation titles. With these magazines, there are generally dozens - if not hundreds - of cartoonists competing for a limited number of spaces in the issue, and it's a matter of sending the editor gags on any number of subjects, and hoping that one of them will hit the mark.
But there are other sides to cartooning, and I spend a fair bit of my time working for trade and industry-specific publications, for which I am the regular cartoonist. Some of these titles may be less well known, but I enjoy these jobs as it enables me to home in on a particular subject and come up with as many jokes as I can relating to that topic - and these also tend to be more reliable gigs!
One such client is a fortnightly trade magazine for the drinks industry, for which I produce a regular gag cartoon on a boozy theme. Here are a few recent examples:
